Oral Health in the classroom
At the Oral Health Foundation, we are dedicated to improving the oral health of young children. From brushing their first tooth, to their first trip to the dentist, a child's oral health plays a key part in their early year's wellbeing.
That’s why we focus on bringing oral health to all in the classroom. We have a full range of resources available for every key stage, as well as creating the opportunity to become a dental buddy or find one in your local area.
Brush Time is a comprehensive tooth brushing programme which has been developed by the Oral Health Foundation to advise nursery and school staff on how they can help children to brush their teeth properly. It is also a really useful guide for dental professionals visiting schools!
The value of introducing a toothbrushing programme in to a school fills an important and urgent need.
Designed to Smile in Wales and Childsmile in Scotland, are two highly successful initiatives which have encouraged toothbrushing in the classroom and seen a direct reduction in early childhood decay as a result.
These programmes have also inspired Starting Well in England, which is providing toothbrushes and fluoride toothpaste packs to children in the local community who are at risk of tooth decay.
Given that tooth decay remains a common problem in young children, the necessity for intervention and pro-active programmes are greatly needed. This is why we have created Brush Time.
Brush Time is suitable for children of all ages in both part-time and full-time education and care, and is freely downloadable.
The programme includes important guidance on the type of toothpaste which should be used for children of certain ages, how to properly brush teeth, how to store toothbrushes between use to avoid infection.
It also includes frequently asked questions about children’s oral hygiene.
Brush Time supports our position as an authority on oral health and promotes some of our key messages; regular daily brushing with an appropriate fluoride toothpaste is highly effective in preventing dental decay and good oral hygiene practice should be established at an early stage in a child’s life and become an integral part of normal daily hygiene.
Brush Time has already been used by hundreds of schools and has seen extremely positive feedback from teachers and healthcare professionals alike.
Teachers play a vital role in a children’s development as they are a trusted and familiar figure for them to learn and develop behaviour from. They can make a real difference when it comes to nurturing children’s tooth brushing behavior and improving their oral lifelong health.
