Key Research Areas Following is an overview of Penn Dental Medicine’s leading research programs. Advanced Therapeutics Investigators are pursuing research focused on advanced therapeutics with the potential for bringing new treatment modalities to everything from dental caries and periodontal disease to diabetes and herpes. Dr. Hyun (Michel) Koo is developing new therapeutic approaches to target biofilm at its core using synthetic as well as naturally occurring agents, including nanotechnology-based drug carriers and compounds in cranberries. View research profile » Dr. Henry Daniell has developed a novel plant-based system that allows for the oral delivery of proteins and is effective in producing and delivering vaccines (for polio, tuberculosis, and malaria) and biopharmaceuticals to treat Alzheimer’s, diabetes, hypertension, hemophilia, muscular dystrophy, and retinopathy. View research profile » Dr. Songtao Shi has isolated and identified several new populations of oral-tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells and is further investigating their use in tissue engineering, disease modeling, and clinical treatment. View research profile » Dr. Dana Graves and colleagues are working with a slow release polymer that improves diabetic bone healing and could be used to treat a number of diseases where inflammation causes bone loss. View research profile » Dr. George Hajishengallis is studying possible therapeutics for periodontal disease, having identified an inhibitor of a protein involved in immunity and inflammatory response that has reversed naturally occurring chronic periodontitis inflammation in a preclinical model. View research profile » Dr. Gary Cohen research is focused on understanding the molecular events that mediate the entry of herpes simplex virus (HSV) into cells and promote its pathogenesis in its human host. Another goal is to develop a subunit vaccine against smallpox using proteins from vaccinia virus or from variola virus (smallpox). Dr. Robert Ricciardi has developed a new technology that holds promise for producing antiviral drugs to combat such diseases as smallpox, herpes ocular keratitis, and a skin disease that largely affects children. To create a channel that can drive these antiviral drug discoveries in providing unmet medical needs, Dr. Ricciardi has founded Viraze, a biotechnology startup company. Dr. Shuying (Sheri) Yang is contributing to an understanding of the molecular mechanisms of bone development, remodeling, and repair, using her insights to identify therapeutic targets to treat bone diseases such as osteoporosis and fracture. Periodontal Disease Investigators pursue novel therapeutic approaches to both treat and prevent this persistent disease. Dr. George Hajishengallis investigates the use of the DEL-1 glycoprotein to prevent and treat the onset of the disease through regulation of the inflammatory immune response. Dr. Dana Graves explores the molecular mechanisms by which inflammation induces periodontal disease, interferes with bone formation and impairs fracture healing. Dr. Joseph Fiorellini employ host-derived diagnostic markers related to soft tissue destruction and bone degradation induced by periodontitis. Dr. Bruce Shenker investigates the use of a bacterial immunotoxin as a pharmacologic agent for treating cancer and inflammatory disorders like peridontitis. Dr. Joseph Fiorellini uses molecular approaches for regrowing damaged tissue via regenerative periodontal therapy. Oral Mucosal Diseases & Bone Disorders Investigators specialize in treating oral mucosal and bone and tissue disorders, especially those induced and/or exacerbated by conventional cancer therapies. Dr. Anh Le investigates the use of human gingival-derived mesenchymal stem cells (GMSC) to treat oral mucositis induced by chemotherapy. She is also investigating the use of these stem cells to treat bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ). View research profile » Dr. Sunday Akintoye & Dr. Elliot Hersh examine how bisphosphonate drugs negatively affect bone density and impair oral health. Dr. Thomas Sollecito develops novel oral drug delivery systems and mucoadhesive products for the treatment of mucosal disorders. He is also creating new treatment modalities for precancerous oral lesions, including leukoplakia and lichen planus/lichenoid mucositis. View research profile » Dr. Eric Stoopler treats plasma cell disorders, multiple myeloma and oral mucosal toxicities caused by melphalan, a common chemotherapeutic agent. Orofacial Pain Penn Dental Medicine is a pioneer in the field of complex dental pain disorders, ranging from TMD/TMJ, orofacial neuralgias and neuropathic pain. In 2012, Penn was designated by the NIH as a National Center of Excellence in Pain Education (in collaboration with Penn’s Schools of Medicine, Dental Medicine & Nursing). Dr. Elliot Hersh is an expert in dental pain models and the pharmacologic management of oral pain. He has directed pivotal studies which led to FDA approval of myriad analgesic and anesthetic agents. He also develops guidelines for postsurgical pain, efficacy and tolerability and dose-ranging studies. Advanced Dental Materials & Devices The School regularly conducts industry-funded laboratory and clinical trials on advanced dental adhesives, cements, restorative and impression materials, biomaterials, advanced coatings, surface treatments and ceramics and employs advanced CAD/CAM technology. Dr. Markus Blatz investigates the clinical performance, efficacy and bond strength of new adhesives systems; the dimensional behavior and fracture tolerance of novel materials; and the biological behavior (cytotoxicity, bacterial adhesion) of restorative materials. View research profile » Dr. Francis Mante explores the use of biomaterials to restore and replace teeth, elastromeric monomers to strengthen dental composites, and novel materials with antimicrobial properties to prevent secondary caries and infection. Dr. Fusun Ozer employs new adhesive materials to increase the longevity of resin fillings and the use of resin adhesives to promote the healing of pulp tissue under deep cavities. Dr. Sunday Akintoye studies biomimetic, calcium-silicate cements that support the differentiation of orofacial mesenchymal stem cells. He also uses beta-catenin to regenerate teeth. Dr. Syngcuk Kim investigates root end filling materials with osteogenic properties to regenerate periapical bone and biomimetic mineralization and biceramic materials for root repair. Dr. Kenneth Kent employs drag-reducing, anti-fouling coatings on the exposed components of implant restorations to reduce surface microbial colonization and improve oral hygiene. Dr. Joseph Fiorellini explores the osseointegration of oral devices and implants, incorporating growth factors to regenerate structure and small molecule signaling and 3-D scaffold development to promote regeneration. Oral & Systemic Health Penn Dental Medicine recognizes that oral health complications are often implicitly linked to systemic health.. Dr. Dana Graves explores the link between diabetes and complications that affect bone formation, fracture repair, periodontal disease and soft tissue healing. Dr. Dana Graves & Dr. Joseph Fiorellini are testing an experimental, biodegradable polymeric pro-drug (NSAID) to reduce inflammation, eliminate bacteria and promote/accelerate bone formation in diabetic patients.

OCTOBER 22, 2018 Students’ Dental Public Health Device Awarded Prize in Innovation Makerthon The CaviLight team members (left-right) Sherry Wan, Catherine Dang, Soren Christensen, and Milo Yu with Dr. Jonathan Rothberg, who started and sponsors the Rothberg Catalyzer Makerthons. The CaviLight team members (left-right) Sherry Wan, Catherine Dang, Soren Christensen, and Milo Yu with Dr. Jonathan Rothberg, who started and sponsors the Rothberg Catalyzer Makerthons. Philadelphia – A team of students from Penn Dental Medicine has been recognized for their innovative healthcare device, taking third place and a $1,000 prize in the Rothberg Catalyzer Makerthon, held at Penn October 13-14. The team included students Soren Christensen, Catherine Dang, Sherry Wan, and Milo Yu from Penn Dental Medicine’s Class of 2020. The Rothberg Catalyzer is a cross-disciplinary event powered by the Penn Center for Health, Devices and Technology (Penn Health-Tech). Held at universities across the country, the Rothberg Catalyzer is the brainchild of scientist and entrepreneur Dr. Jonathan Rothberg, who invented high-speed DNA sequencing. With his funding, students work in teams to develop a product aimed at solving a healthcare challenge. This was the second time Penn Health-Tech presented a Rothberg Catalyzer – the inaugural Makerthon was held in March 2018. During this immersive two-day event, student teams collaborate on a simple prototyping project that is then presented to a panel of judges at the end of the weekend. The competition drew 43 teams that included graduate and undergraduate students from Penn’s School of Engineering & Applied Science, Arts & Sciences, Design, Medicine, and Wharton, in addition to the team from Penn Dental Medicine. The Penn Dental Medicine team, dubbed “CaviLight,” developed an inexpensive and easy-to-use device to be used in schools for early caries screening in children. The device uses fluorescent light to reveal if demineralization of a child’s teeth is occurring — this early sign of decay can be reversed if detected and treated early. The CaviLight team proposed its use by school staff to detect and refer children for dental care. In 2017, the Surgeon General reported that dental caries (tooth decay) is the single most common chronic childhood diseases – five times more common than asthma and seven times more common than hay fever. The report concluded that the social impact of oral diseases in children is substantial with more than 51 million school hours lost each year to dental-related illness that can lead to problems in eating, speaking, and attending to learning. It also noted that poor children suffer nearly 12 times more restricted-activity days than children from higher-income families. “By providing a tool for early detection of tooth demineralization that can be used outside of the dental office, by a non-dentist, children can easily be triaged and referred for treatment at their local dentist, a major step in breaking down barriers to care,” says team member Catherine Dang (D’20). Pew Charitable Trusts reports that more than 18 million low-income children go without dental care and that 78% of children on Medicaid across four states did not have required dental services. “We congratulate Soren, Cat, Milo, and Sherry on their efforts to develop creative and practical solutions to address significant community issues”, says Dr. Joan Gluch, Associate Dean and Division Chief, Community Oral Health at Penn Dental Medicine. “Innovative strategies, such as CaviLight, will help ensure that more children can access the dental care they need.

News :Four School of Dentistry students named CEW+ scholars

Three dental hygiene students and a DDS student at the School of Dentistry received scholarships from CEW+ Sunday during the organization’s 48th annual awards program. The organization, formerly known as the Center for the Education of Women, presented 58 scholarships and four fellowships. The scholarship program was established in 1970 as part of the center’s early efforts to support women returning to school; today the program serves nontraditional students of all genders, providing financial support and recognition for students whose voices and experiences are unique in comparison to their peers. Students from the dental school who received awards this year are: • Allison Carron, in her second year of the three-year Dental Hygiene bachelor’s program, received a Margaret Dow Towsley Scholarship. Carron is a 2011 U-M graduate in fine arts whose career path began as an administrative assistant at two universities. She decided to switch into dental hygiene with the ultimate goal of earning a master’s degree and working as a dental hygiene educator. • Collen Freund, a second-year student in the on-campus Dental Hygiene Degree Completion program, received the Robert Bruce Dunlap Memorial Scholarship. After earning an associate’s degree in dental hygiene, Freund worked as a hygienist for several years to pay her student loans. Encouraged by patients to pursue her dream of being a dentist, she is now working toward her bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene, then plans to apply to dental school. • Kristy Sanfilippo, a second-year student in the E-Learning Degree Completion Program, received the Molly H. Dobson Scholarship. Family, work and financial obligations prevented Sanfilippo from going beyond her associate’s degree in dental hygiene for several years, but she was inspired by a co-worker who returned for a bachelor’s degree later in life. Once Sanfilippo finishes the bachelor’s degree, she plans to pursue a master’s in either dental hygiene or public health. • Heather Rae McAlvey, a third-year DDS student, received a Margaret Dow Towsley Scholarship. After completing her undergraduate degree in Spanish, McAlvey worked for Americorps VISTA, connecting members of a predominantly Spanish-speaking community to food banks, health care professionals and domestic violence shelters. She later worked at a nonprofit farm that provided rehabilitation services to people with traumatic brain injuries. On track to graduate from dental school in 2020, her vision is to use her career as a dentist to spread health and well-being to those who need it most. CEW+ said the collective $390,000 in awards this year is the largest annual total in its history. This year’s scholarships range from $1,000 to $15,000, with an average of $6,000, to cover the cost of tuition and living expenses. The organization was founded in 1964 and its first scholarships were awarded in the fall of 1970 to mark the 100th anniversary of women being admitted to U-M. CEW+ provides immediate and ongoing services and the financial support needed to ensure educational success and degree completion. Women and underserved students are CEW+’s primary constituency, but all students are welcome. CEW+ also serves those who encounter education and career obstacles based on their non-linear paths to, and experiences within, the university community. Funding for its scholarships and fellowships comes from individuals, organizations, clubs and foundations. More information about CEW+ is available on its website.

Dr. Mark Fitzgerald, Associate Dean for Community-Based Collaborative Care and Education at the School of Dentistry, has received an award for his leadership and design work in the development of interprofessional education on the 1 oct 2018
. The Midwest Interprofessional Practice, Education and Research Center (MIPERC) announced that Fitzgerald, along with Joseph House, MD, of the U-M Medical School, are the recipients of the 2018 MIPERC Demonstration Model Award. MIPERC, administered by Grand Valley State University, is a consortium of 25 universities, colleges and health care enterprises in six states that study how to develop collaborative, innovative and interprofessional initiatives across disciplines, learning institutions and health care systems. In working with the Interprofessional Clinical Experience (ICE) program, Fitzgerald and House were credited with leveraging the expertise gained serving on the Michigan Center for IPE Executive Committee team to bring medical and dental students together for interdisciplinary clinical experiences. ICE, which is based at the medical school, introduces students to the team-based aspect of the health care environment early in their education, developing students’ skills and awareness around respectful, appropriate and professional communication. “Together they can now shadow health professionals, such as pharmacists, social workers, nurses, physical therapists, to learn about team-based care and interprofessional education,” explained U-M Center for IPE Director Frank Ascione in his award nomination. “This is a unique partnership because dentists and physicians are rarely educated together. In addition, they are being formally exposed to the work of other professions in the clinical setting in a multidisciplinary way.” Fitzgerald, an associate professor in the Department of Cariology, Restorative Sciences and Endodontics, received the award recently in Grand Rapids at the annual MIPERC conference. In his role as Associate Dean for Community-Based Collaborative Care and Education, he leads the school’s statewide outreach program that supports practical dental education. As a regional interprofessional education association, MIPERC receives support from the National Center for Interprofessional Education and Practice. The University of Michigan has had an increasing presence with MIPERC since the founding of U-M’s own three-campus Michigan Center for IPE in 2015.

Otago researcher navigating towards Te Rā

A University of Otago researcher is part of a group looking to uncover the secrets of the oldest known Māori sail stored at the British Museum. Dr Catherine Smith, textiles specialist and senior research fellow from the Dodd-Walls Centre and Ms Donna Campbell (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Ruanui), a weaver and senior lecturer in Creative Practice at the University of Waikato, are leading an interdisciplinary team undertaking kaupapa Māori research on Te Rā. The campaign, supported by a Te Apārangi Marsden Fund grant, is one of the feature stories in the latest edition of the University of Otago Magazine. One aspect of the project is visiting Te Rā at the British Museum, where they will uncover the unique weaving techniques used on the centuries-old sail, before distributing that knowledge to Māori communities, as well as the wider public. Te Rā itself has never been previously fully documented or studied. The project aims to advance knowledge of the Māori sail and gain a greater understanding of how Māori voyaged. “Te Rā has been in storage for 250 years, has probably been visited by 10 New Zealanders in the time it has been there, and has never been fully described,” Dr Smith says. “We need to document Te Rā and communicate the knowledge contained within her to the wider community so it won’t ever be lost again.” The research team comprises Ngāi Tahu senior weaver Mrs Ranui Ngarimu (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Mutunga) who specialises in the repair, restoration, and replication of customary Māori textiles, and Ms Jeanette Wikaira (Ngāti Pukenga, Ngāti Tamaterā, Ngāpuhi) who is undertaking contextual research on sails as taonga. Also involved is Hokimate Harwood (Ngāpuhi), Bicultural Science Researcher from Te Papa, who will identify the feathers used in Te Rā, and San Francisco-based Cultural Heritage Imaging who will create a 3D model. The group has been bound together by strong connections to research about Māori weaving. “There are really important taonga that we don’t have in New Zealand any more that have been taken away. We’re divorced from that knowledge and access to that knowledge,” Dr Smith says. She says the group is at the beginning of the process and are navigating their way through how the three-year project will play out. Breaking News

The University of Otago has once again come out top of the key Government indicators measuring the educational performance of students at New Zealand’s universities. Released this week by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC), the annual Educational Performance Indicators (EPIs) examine course and qualification completions, retention rates and progression to higher levels of study. According to the current suite of measures, Otago ranked a clear first for student qualification completions, first year retention and progression to higher levels of study. In the other key measure, of course completion, Otago ranked second by a slender margin. Assessing performance over 2017, the most recent complete academic year, this result follows an Otago clean sweep of all the key indicators in 2016, and Otago topping all but one of the measures the year before. The result comes just weeks after Otago academics secured four awards at the national tertiary teaching awards including – for the sixth time in seven years – the Prime Minister’s Supreme Award for Tertiary Teaching Excellence. Otago Vice-Chancellor Professor Harlene Hayne welcomed the release of the latest indicators. “The University of Otago has always rated very highly in the TEC’s annual educational performance indicators, and I am delighted we have done so well again this year. “This also reflects the excellence of our teaching staff and the systems we have and are continuing to fine-tine to enhance our learning environment. This result is ultimately earned by our students, who put a huge commitment into achieving their full potential. “The timing of this news is especially fitting as our undergraduate students have just commenced their final exams for 2018; I am confident they will be achieving to a level that will mean Otago will continue to do well in the Educational Performance Indicator rankings a year from now.” Otago’s showing in the 2017 TEC performance measures: Student progression rate to higher level study (93 per cent) Course completion rate (89 per cent) First-year retention rate (84 per cent) Qualification completion rate (74 per cent) The full results for universities can be viewed on the TEC website.
